What happened?

I haven't felt shin splint pain like this since my first few training runs back in January. I stretch and ice regularly. It's been all good. On monday I went to the gym, to run a 3-miler, and the pain was really bad. I slowed down more times than usual and kept stretching, thinking maybe because I took off the 2 days before the race and a day after the race, that they just needed some more warming up. By 2 miles, I was in unbearable pain. Thank goodness for cruise control on the car or I don't think I could have even made it home! It was really that bad, worse in fact, than any of the shin splint pain I have EVER felt before.

I came home and looked up some info. It turns out that running uphill can cause them to flair. Well there ya go folks... I knew I had done everything the way I usually do. I did my intervals, warmed up, stretched and ran lightly through the race. Well, it's all because of the hills. Now I know to ice more often after a hilly race, which will be most of them here in Las Vegas.

Lesson most definitely learned.

Congrats on your 5K and so sorry about the shin splints! Do you need new shoes? Are there any soft trails to run on? Avoid running on sidewalks! Hope it gets better soon. Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm in Minnesota:-)
