What happened?

I haven't felt shin splint pain like this since my first few training runs back in January. I stretch and ice regularly. It's been all good. On monday I went to the gym, to run a 3-miler, and the pain was really bad. I slowed down more times than usual and kept stretching, thinking maybe because I took off the 2 days before the race and a day after the race, that they just needed some more warming up. By 2 miles, I was in unbearable pain. Thank goodness for cruise control on the car or I don't think I could have even made it home! It was really that bad, worse in fact, than any of the shin splint pain I have EVER felt before.

I came home and looked up some info. It turns out that running uphill can cause them to flair. Well there ya go folks... I knew I had done everything the way I usually do. I did my intervals, warmed up, stretched and ran lightly through the race. Well, it's all because of the hills. Now I know to ice more often after a hilly race, which will be most of them here in Las Vegas.

Lesson most definitely learned.

I did what?

Yup, that's right. I ran my first 5k today! yeah buddddddy!

Next race I'll be volunteering at is March 7th. Next one I'll run a 5k on March 14th.

I really have to add that I absolutely LOVE Calico Racing. Joyce is the bomb diggity and puts on such a great race!! She is so organized and accomodating. I think I'm spoiled now. The standard she sets is high and I hope all my future races are as welcoming and serving. There's so much food, awesome shirts, great volunteers and the locations are so sweeeeet.
